Compare kilolitres, not only Rands
Check how many kilolitres were billed this month and compare that with your normal history. A large unit increase points toward consumption or reading differences.
Check for estimated readings
If the bill uses an estimated reading, compare it with the physical meter. A later actual reading can also reconcile earlier estimates.
Check for possible leaks
Turn off taps and water-using appliances and observe whether the meter continues to move. Hidden toilet, pipe, geyser or underground leaks can materially increase consumption.
Check the meter number
Where the bill shows a meter number, compare it with the number on the meter serving the property. If they do not correspond, that is something to query.
Look at the reading dates
A longer period between readings can produce more units on one bill even if daily usage did not change dramatically.
Separate current water charges from the total balance
The total amount due may contain arrears and other municipal services. Identify the actual water charge before concluding that water itself caused the whole account increase.
Turn your municipal bills into a trackable history.
Billing Assist helps organise bill data, meter readings, usage and account movements and can flag potential anomalies for you to review.

Can a small leak cause a large water bill?
Yes. A leak that runs continuously can add substantial consumption over a full billing period.
What if the billed reading is higher than my physical meter?
Record a clear dated photograph and query the difference with the municipality using the account's prescribed process.
Can Billing Assist monitor my water trend?
Billing Assist is designed to store bill data and meter information so changes can be compared over time.
